Hey Mike, Landed on your “How to buy a Used Conga” and thought that I would clarify for you that Jay is still making his own drums from the bottom up. Although he does have an apprentice, he is part of all of the steps in making each drum. Josh, his apprentice, is his assistant, not the drum maker. Anyone that buys a set of Jay’s drums will find that they remain one of the best drums money can buy. I do not work for Jay and other than talking with him over the phone a few times, do not know him. I bought a new set last year — love the drums — and just want to set the record straight. I have one of his quinto’s made in the ’80′s and there is no difference between it and the new set. I’ve owned a lot of drums in my 54 years and in my opinion, Jay’s are my favorite. The man puts his soul into these drums and unlike the mass produced drums made in Thailand these days, Jay’s drums are all handmade including all of the metal work made in his own foundry. Hi Mike, Thanks for the update! Much appreciated! I have a set of four of Jay’s drums he made for me in 1985. Love them! Only been reheaded once or twice amazingly enough. The quinto went out of round but I take responsibility for that (not tuning them down after playing sometimes). The drums were on the mainland with me, then Maui, for a few years then the mainland, then Big Island of Hawaii for a few years, then mainland (now). Never had any problems with the wood or anything else!
