In this lesson, you will learn 16 of my favorite West African based dunun rhythms, played ballet style. Ballet style is when you play the two or three dunun vertically, upright, by yourself instead of the traditional style where one person plays each drum in a horizontal position. Playing ballet style dunun is a practical and fun way to play all the dunun parts at the same time without having three players.
I show each rhythm in both moderate and slow tempos with occasional slow motion sequences for the more complicated pieces. I also show different styles of playing the dunun parts with or without a bell pattern.
Pieces included are:
- Kakilambe in 4
- Kakilambe in 6
- Mali Sunu
This is a lesson suitable for advanced beginners to advanced players. The parts are played on both 2 and 3 drums when possible.
