 I am very happy and excited to tell you about an amazing new film documentary by Aja Salvatore called “Music In Mali: Life Is Hard, Music Is Good”. This feature-length documentary is about the musicians, dancers and everyday people of Mali who are creating inspiring heartfelt music in some of the most difficult living conditions of West Africa. [...]  I have had the great opportunity to know and to have been playing for Lasensua for over 20 years or more. I first met her on the Big Island of Hawaii. Lasensua has lived, studied & performed in many areas of the world. Her travels started in 1974, when she became immersed in Hawaiian culture through their music & “Hula” dance. She has journeyed to Brazil, Cuba, West Africa, Caribbean, Tahiti, India & Indonesia to live and study dance on location. [...]  Several years ago we went to Brazil to study Afro Brazilian music and dance. We were fortunate to meet members and teachers from the famous group Olodum. It took me years, but I was finally able to get some video footage up of our trip there so here it is! But first a little bit abut the group Olodum! Olodum is an internationally acclaimed Afro-Brazilian cultural group from Bahia, Brazil. The African dancers are from Cameroon, Liberia and other parts of West Africa. In this performance of live world music and world dance we are performing at the incredible Skytop Dream Bar in downtown Bangkok, Thailand for a music festival and celebration. It is located outside Sabalibougou. ‘Bougou’ means ‘village’ in Bambara language, although it is located in a city district inside a bustling market place on the outskirts of Bamako, Mali, West Africa. The community center houses local dancers, drummers and musicians, most of whom play in the center’s award-winning group. Didadee singer Sumba Togala The music for this CD was made at Centre Togola, the local community center, run by director Kareem Togola. It is located outside Sabalibougou. ‘Bougou’ means ‘village’ in Bambara language, although it is located in a city district inside a bustling market place [...] This is a performance by the Lavaroots ensemble on the Big Island of Hawaii and is called Kassa, which is a West African traditional harvest dance from Guinea, West Africa. Female West African dancers (formerly of Guinea West Africa’s famous Ballet Merveilles) drum, dance and dance solo with master djembe drummer (djembe fola) Bolokada Cond (from Les Percussions Du Guinee) and his group Les Percussions Melenke in Bolinas, California. The first piece with dancers is “Mane”, from Guinea West Africa. This video was shot at a dununba djembe drum and community dance party in Conakry Guinea my friend and teacher, the late great Komoko Sano took me to on my musical and percussion study tour to Guinea. Each dancer at a party takes a turn to show off their “stuff” or dance moves. If someone really likes your moves, they run out and give you money, which is the custom. Also, at the [...] |
