The craftsmanship of the bearing edge—where the skin meets the shell—should also be adjusted meticulously to achieve the best sound. The height of the rim is important as is the distance of the inner ring to shell. 

2. Materials: Ideal djembes are constructed from well-treated, solid high grade woods. The shell should be free from defects, no previous repairs and the skin must be smooth and blemish-free. 1. Koma Drum: by Tom Kondas in Ohio

   

   Our top pick, Koma Drum, is celebrated for its craftsmanship and consistent sound. Their dedication to detail is evident in every drum they produce. He started the whole decorative carving phase in Guinea and will be featured in an article about this soon here in an exclusive interview. Koma Drum is clearly “state of the art”.

2. Lucid Drums by AJ Agostino:

   

   Known for bringing out the life in stunning carvings, great wood treatment, flawless flap-overs, (the “cuff” style), and great sound! He uses high-quality rope, and works from a stash of his favorite skins he has stored for years! Lucid Drums offers instruments that are not only visually appealing but also sound fantastic. 

   Djembe Life Drums: Formerly of  L.A., now ensconced in South Florida. David gets amazing sound! For me, he is number 1 in sound.

3. 

   With a reputation for exceptional sound quality, Djembe Life may not be a household name, but their drums resonate with drummers seeking authenticity and depth.  Djembe Life Drums has built and repaired several drums for me! Nothing leaves the shop unless it has his sound. David’s drums are fully tuned and ready to play when you receive it.

4. Wula Drum: Another of the long time drum companies, been around forever and great sound, great quality. Michael Markus the owner knows what’s up!

   

   Focusing on quality and consistency, Wula Drum is the go-to choice for drummers who desire a reliable instrument that delivers exceptional performance. They are fairly priced and have great decorative carvings. Wula Drum is backed by master drummer M’Bemba Bangoura.

5. Drumskull Drums: Matt Hardwick is one of the hardest working guys in the business. He has been at the forefront of much of the new and creative development with djembes over the years and is always a creative genius!

   

   This maker stands out for their intricate carvings, fine attention to detail, inovations and high sound quality. They infuse creativity into their designs while maintaining excellent tonal characteristics. One of the original companies and custom builders! You can’t go wrong with California’s Drumskull Drum.

6. Wooden Roots:

   

   Located in the UK, Wooden Roots produces visually stunning drums. Notably, they have a loyal following among drummers for their artistic appeal and sound. I have owned some of their drums as have my friends. Everyone has been very happy with them. Marcus Keel Brown  has really gotten his craft down pat!  Please note that shipping costs and delays may occur due to their location.

7. Djembe Mafia:

   

   A personal favorite, Djembe Mafia offers a range of high-quality drums. They also supply Mali made shells to many of the other companies and builders. The overall sound and playability make them a worthwhile choice.

8. Djembe Drums And Skins:

   

   For those on a budget, Shorty’s drums, now under new ownership, offer affordable options renowned for their sound. They primarily specialize in Ivory Coast djembes made from Iroko wood. Djembe Drums & Skins has build your own kits as well as builders tables and supplies.

9. Motherland Music:

   

   Offering a huge variety of drums and all kinds of percussion at various price points, their standout instruments are often hand-crafted djembes by Yousouff, a respected carver who supplies shells for Djembe Mafia and others, ensuring solid quality. Motherland Music has been around for many years as well.

10. Wassoulou Percussions by Michael Tivier:

    

    With years of experience and some drums aged over seven years, Michael Tivier is a reputable source for high-quality djembes. While personal evaluation is limited, testimonials highlight his craftsmanship. Wassoulou Percussions also has drumming programs in Mali.

Honorable Mentions

Consider also Timothy Dabrowski in Colorado, Nate Vellinga, and Moshe Millon, who have built outstanding drums. Jeremy Tomasck of AWA earns a great reputation as well, though I have yet to hear one personally. There are many more companies and people building great drums that I have never seen, heard or know about. My teacher, the great Bolokada Conde builds drums. In Maine Namory Keita builds drums. So this is by no means intended to be the final word. Simply my favorite companies and drum makers that I have had the great fortune to deal with.
