The Top Ten Djembes: A Comprehensive Guide to Quality and Sound

Introduction

The world of djembe drums is vast and vibrant, with an astonishing array of choices available to both novice and professional drummers. While it’s tempting to gravitate towards popular, big-name brands, some of the finest djembes are crafted by smaller, independent makers who pour their expertise and passion into every drum. This article delves into the qualities that define an outstanding djembe and shines a light on notable drum makers that have carved a niche in this dynamic landscape.

What Defines a Great Djembe?

When selecting a djembe, the primary focus should always be on quality. Here are key characteristics to consider:

  1. Craftsmanship: Quality finishes, even rope spacing, overall balance and smooth, even drum skins are essential. Even thickness in the bowl walls is important. The craftsmanship of the bearing edge—where the skin meets the shell—should also be adjusted meticulously to achieve the best sound. The height of the rim is important as is the distance of the inner ring to shell.

  2. Materials: Ideal djembes are constructed from well-treated, solid high grade woods. The shell should be free from defects, no previous repairs and the skin must be smooth and blemish-free. The ropes should be high quality. Koma, Drumskull, Djembe Drums and Skins  and Wula Drum use their own brand sourced ropes.

  3. Sound: A great djembe produces a rich, resonant tone that remains consistent across its range. The harmonics should be balanced, and different tonal pitches should be clearly distinguishable.

  4. Construction Quality: Factors like how the rubber bottom is attached—glued rather than nailed—contribute to the longevity and playability of the drum. The skin type, place of origin and mounting style, “look” and neatness is also factors.

  5. Brand Sound: Some makers, like Wula Drum and Djembe Life, have developed a signature sound, setting their drums apart from others on the market.

Consider also Timothy Dabrowski in Colorado, Nate Vellinga, and Moshe Millon, who have built outstanding drums. Jeremy Tomasck of AWA earns a great reputation as well, though I have yet to hear one personally. There are many more companies and people building great drums that I have never seen, heard or know about. My teacher, the great Bolokada Conde builds drums. In Maine Namory Keita builds drums. So this is by no means intended to be the final word. Simply my favorite companies and drum makers that I have had the great fortune to deal with.

The Importance of Experience

While established brands have certain advantages, smaller, independent makers often provide a unique personal touch and unmatched expertise cultivated over years of practice. Makers like Koma and Wula demonstrate that hands-on knowledge can lead to superior craftsmanship and sound quality.

Conclusion

Finding the best djembe goes beyond simply choosing a well-known brand. It requires a careful examination of craftsmanship, sound quality, and materials. By giving independent drum makers a chance, you’ll discover instruments that not only meet your musical demands but also enhance your overall drumming experience. Remember, the right djembe can help elevate your music to new heights, making the pursuit well worth your effort.
