Welcome to the Tab Notation section!
This particular notation system, developed by Margot Van Riper and shared with me, provides a basic skeleton form of various rhythms. It’s important to note that this notation isn’t intended to represent the full version of any piece.
Many of these pieces were taught to us by Bolokada Conde when he was living in the Bay Area, and some of the arrangements are popular versions shared by several different teachers. I also want to thank all my teachers who have taught me these pieces, including Bolokada, M’bemba Bangoura, Karamba Diabate, Abdoulaye Diakate, Komoko Sano, Mamady Keita, Mabiba Baegne, and others.
Understanding Tab Notation
Skeleton System: The Tab Notation offers a simplified version of rhythms, serving as a foundation or starting point for learners.
Diverse Interpretations: Based on my personal experience, versions of pieces can vary widely from village to village, region to region, and even from country to country. There’s no single “correct” way to play these rhythms.
Cultural Variations: Different regional accents and pronunciations are often reflected in the spellings used. These notations are typically written down by foreigners rather than by the teachers or local players themselves.
We hope this section helps you in your drumming journey, offering a glimpse into the rich variety of rhythms and their interpretations across different cultures.
